Homework 2. Due Monday September 11th
Part 1 - Drawing Assignment:
This
assignment involves the practice
of
figure construction from photographs using an
egg form for the ribcage and a bathing-suit style form for the
pelvis. Construct the arms and legs as tapering cylinders and clearly
draw the planes of the head.
Choose
a combination of front and back ¾ views. When drawing the legs, have
the lower leg start as a cylinder but end with the proper ankle-foot
connection (show how the ankle bones grab onto the sides of the foot,
and draw the foot as a simple but dimensional form). Also, be sure to
draw the scapula and clavicle (shoulder blade and collar bone) when
applicable.
I've compiled some images for you at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B08nCszkPL1oMFVtSDhXWFZDVjQ?usp=sharing. From the roughly 100 images in the folder, I want you to do 10 figure constructions. You should spend about 15-20 minutes per drawing. I want one drawing per page (use front and back to save paper). Try timing yourself so that each drawing is around 15-20 minutes long.
Use a ballpoint pen in an 11x14" sketchbook. Exaggerate the pose a bit. Remember that while you are focusing a lot on form construction, you still need to maintain a gestural feel to the drawing. In other words, make sure that the drawing doesn't look stiff and robotic. Draw the gesture first, then build the forms on top.
The example image below was taken from a sketchbook so you will have a better sense of what you're aiming for. Notice that the planes of the head are well-defined and there is a center line and eye line across the face. The neck and limbs are cylindrical, the torso uses the egg and bathing suit forms and there is a center line and a cross-contour line over the chest and pelvis. The scapula is visible from the back and the clavicle is visible from the front. Pay attention to how the ankles and feet are drawn. Again, make sure that you maintain a fluid gesture as you construct. Pay attention to the flow of the figure, how the weight is balanced, the angle of the shoulders and hips, etc.

Part 2 - Written Assignment:
Write a short paragraph about yourself and include your name, email address and a selfie. Example:

I am taking this class because I plan on transferring to Laguna College of Art + Design as an animation major. I am hoping this class will help to improve my gesture drawing and better my understanding of the human form. I have been drawing since I was about ten years old, and I have always loved 3D animated films so it has been my dream to become an animator at a major studio such as Disney or Pixar. I one day hope to create my own independent animated film based on my childhood stories.
Please upload your written assignment and photos of your drawing homework to your Google Drive folder before the start of class on Monday Sept 11th. Your photos should look something like the example image below, they should be clear, in focus, well-lit, and if possible, take pictures of two front-and-back pages at a time to cut down on the number of photos you have to upload. DO NOT upload images upside down, I will hate you for it.
Remember there is no class next Monday Sept 4th for Labor Day.

Thought you were a salsa-dancing major James. Animation major people are losers.
