Homework 1. Due Monday August 28th
Hi Class,
For your first homework assignment I want you to practice figure construction from photographs using the idea of the egg-and-box torso with cylindrical arms and legs. The planes of the head should articulated when applicable, and include a center line and eye line (refer to the example image below).
I've compiled some images for you at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B08nCszkPL1oMFVtSDhXWFZDVjQ?usp=sharing. From the roughly 100 images in the folder, I want you to do 20 figure constructions. You should spend about 6-8 minutes per drawing. I want to see two drawings per page (use front and back to save paper). Try timing yourself so that each drawing is around 6-8 minutes long.
Use a ballpoint pen in an 11x14" sketchbook. Exaggerate the pose a bit. Remember that while you are constructing a lot of form, you still need to maintain a gestural feel to the drawing. In other words, make sure that the drawing doesn't look stiff and robotic. Draw the gesture first, then build the forms on top.
The example image below was taken from a sketchbook so you will have a better sense of what you're aiming for. Notice the planes of the face, the egg-and-box torso (with a center line), and the cylindrical form of the arms and legs. Also, notice that the scapula is shown in the back views and the clavicle is shown in the front. Don't forget to maintain a fluid gesture as you construct. Pay attention to the flow of the figure, how the weight is balanced, the angle of the shoulders and hips, etc.
Please upload photos of your drawings to your Google Drive folder before the start of next class on Aug 28th (find the link on our Blackboard home page). Your photos should look something like the example image below, they should be clear, in focus, well-lit, and if possible, take pictures of two front-and-back pages at a time to cut down on the number of photos you have to upload. DO NOT upload images upside down, I will hate you for it.
